Little is known about the corresponding grouper genes; however, the availability of the complete grouper genome sequence has made it possible to identify all the β -hsd genes in this species for the first time. In the present study, we systematically idntified 19 putative β -hsd genes in the E. coioides genome, and subsequently characterized the genes in terms of position in the genome, exon-intron structure and conserved domains. In addition, we also isolated β -hsd genes in samples of human, mouse, chicken, xenopus, coelacanth, spotted gar, zebrafish, fugu, tilapia, medaka, stickleback, and common carp.
